371 – Heart of the Forest

This chapter still needs some tlc, so it will probably be updated in a couple hours if there happens to be a change, although I’m fairly confident on the quality of the translation. TLC done.

Enjoy.

As Roland walked to the center of the garden, he couldn’t help but to stare at it.

At the end of the garden’s passageway, a small room built entirely out of plants welcomed him, the trees’ trunks and the enhanced crops formed up the walls, the vines hung overhead, spread in a crisscross pattern as if being carefully woven by someone, and among their green leaves, the glittering grapes hung in bundles.

A bonfire was burning in the middle of the room, surrounded by furniture that had a tone of green—but on a closer look, that furniture was made up entirely out of strange plants that stretched out from the ground.

For a moment, he thought he had arrived in a world straight out of a fairy tale, and if not for the several familiar figures standing on the side of the bonfire, he really would have wondered if this was indeed a dream.

“What is going on?”

Tilly turned back, and with a look of admiration she said, “Leaf’s ability has evolved, she transformed into this garden.”

“But, where is she?” Roland was shocked.

“She has merged herself with the plants,” Tilly looked around, “In the sight before you, everything you see is a part of Leaf.”

The feeling that I was walking inside of a giant creature was not just an illusion, but when the “giant creature” was found out to be Leaf, Roland suddenly felt nervous, “Will she be able to recover?”

“As long as the ability is released, I’ll return back to normal,” the sound of Leaf’s words was suddenly heard. But after listening to it carefully, it was not like she was speaking with her voice, but instead it was more like the rustling of the leaves, and the branches grinding against each other that made that sound.

Leaf’s answer apparently calmed Roland down a little, then he asked, “Can you hear us?”

“Not only can I hear, but I can also see, smell, touch…” Leaf seemed to be very cheerful, “I can feel any small change occurring in the garden, including the nesting birds on the branches, the worms crawling inside the trees’ trunks… it is a feeling difficult to describe with words, but what Miss Tilly said is correct, I have become the garden itself, and I noticed your arrival from the moment you set foot in it.”

Just as she said this, a giant curled leaf came down from the ceiling onto Roland’s hand, and after slowly rolling open, a small cup with purple-red liquid was revealed. The cup was formed by four overlapping olive leaves, with the petiole as the ear of the cup, giving off a stylish and nifty look.

Roland grabbed it and placed it on his lips, taking a sip from it, discovering that this was a freshly-made wine, and with an acidity that gave off a refreshing sweetness. It appeared that both the wine and the container, came out from this garden.

After Roland finished Leaf’s “proposed toast”, he approached the campfire and as he observed the plant sofa-like bench with great interest, he sat on it—it was composed of interweaved branches with thick bark, the seat and back cushions were made out of broad wheat heads with grains in them, and after sitting on it, it felt very similar to a normal couch. At the side of the campfire stood several barbecue skewers, and Andrea was baking some apples and corn for everyone. Without a doubt, those too, were food provided by the garden.

“How did you accomplish all this?” the prince raised his head and asked.

“I’m not quite sure about the process,” the sound of the voice quickly answered, “All I did was take care of the new plants and the messenger birds as usual, and by studying and practicing my abilities—they suddenly answered to my call. Perhaps this was the path that I was searching for, truly making the forest and the life it breeds into a coherent one.”

“What if you were to exert your power over the Concealing Forest? Can you make it become a part of you?”

“I think… it is not likely,” she hesitated for a moment, “And even if I could, it is possible that it would take a long time. It doesn’t take that much magic to maintain this state, and even then, the woods can replenish it for me, but every time I extend my area of control, it makes my thinking feels slow.”

“Your thinking feels slow?” Roland stared blankly after saying these words.

“I don’t know how to describe this feeling,” Leaf said, “If I slowly expand the land under my control, after a few years, I should be able to become one with the Concealing Forest. But if I try an instant merge, I’m afraid I might lose my mind—the first time I fused with the garden, I had this feeling that my brain was not enough, as if my mind suddenly expanded dramatically, and I had to accustom myself for a long time before I was able to return to normal.” She paused for a moment, then added, “But on the plants that have already been controlled once, if I enter them again I don’t have that unfamiliar feeling, so as long as I have time to practice, I believe your idea can be achieved.”

Indeed, it is amazing, Roland thought to himself, Anna and Lily moved towards a micro-oriented evolution, but Leaf’s new ability is clearly a breakthrough in a macro-oriented direction. If she’s able to take control over the whole Concealing Forest one day, there is no doubt that any movements from the enemy will never escape her eyes and ears.

“Congratulations,” Wendy smiled, “Now the Witch Union has another evolved witch, and according to what Agatha said, this is equal to the scale of half of the Federation.”

“If she were here, she would be lamenting it for a while,” Roland laughed, then looked towards the little girl who was stealing curious glances at him, “And what about Paper?”

“About her ability… I’m afraid we still need further testing,” Wendy replied truthfully, “I found a strange phenomenon.”

As she said that, after a snap of her fingers, two packs of snow fell from the roof.

Wendy separated them both, placing one pack of snow besides the campfire, and the other was placed in a corner of the room, then she had paper make use of her ability, “I’m instructing her on how to use magic evenly, to stabilize her ability in order to exert its effect—like you originally taught me to. Right now, she doesn’t have a precise control, but in general, she’s getting there.”

Roland noticed that the snow near the bonfire quickly turned into a puddle of cold water, but the snow that was farther away only melted half way.

Wendy carried the melted water and walked towards the wall, after knocking on it, the tightly wrapped vines contracted to the sides, revealing a hole the size of a fist, and allowing for the cold wind quickly pour in.

“Now come, and use your ability on this,” she said to Paper.

The girl nodded, and after reaching out her hands, Roland was surprised to find that the cold water contained in the leaf-made cup had a thin layer of ice crystals over it.

“Is this… time acceleration, to make the results happen faster than they should? As soon as these words left his mouth, he immediately rejected that conjecture, That’s not it, time is just a concept that human beings set up out of convenience, and it, on itself does not exist. So, as a non-existing thing, how can you affect it?

“I began to think the same way, but Lady Tilly said that it was not the case,” Wendy attached a stone to a vine and as it hung, she slightly swayed it in front of Paper. The young witch used her ability once more, but the speed of the pendulum did not change, it just continued swinging, slowly decreasing its scope, until it finally stopped. “If it was time acceleration, the stone should swing faster, right?”

Indeed, Roland soon realized the nature of this girl’s ability—she was not affecting time, she affected the motion of the water molecules. Her magic changed the energy levels of the molecules, making it lower or higher, which on a broader scale means freezing or melting. It is likely that Paper herself may not understand any of this at all, so she’s only using her ability based on her feelings, that’s why the effect on other objects is small: Oxidation, for example, is a long process, it takes much longer to observe the results.

If he was actually right, her ability was surprisingly a perfect catalyst.

    1. That moment when you realize you’re above many but below one.

If you were an arrogant novel villain, we’d be waiting to see you get face slapped by the MC 😀

  1. So…. plant tentacle play for leaf? ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Jokes aside, Border Town would probably invulnerable to subterfuge if Leaf can extend its range to at least the whole area.

    1. No. But did you see how leaf is smart? She stole a kiss with ronald and did a play of sit on me with him… Since she is the cup and the chair…

      1. And if she merge with the forest, she’ll get killed by Border Town’s lumberjack many times.

Though the thought of Leaf stealing march on Roland by getting him wrapped in a living tree is a bit interesting.

        1. That’s silly. Didn’t you notice the fruits the witches were eating, and the drink Roland had? That was all a part of Leaf, originally. So, her soul doesn’t reside in the plants. At least not in any simple fashion, though she might have a ‘core’ of sorts. This means she can take control of the plants and use them as neurological extensions..!!! anyone remember the root monster in Avatar? The waterbenders of the swamp by the giant tree? That…. would be awesome! Her ability must have a limit, or else she can slowly take over all the plant life in the world! The trees have eyes! The ground/grass has ears! And can literally move to kill you!

          1. Well, the fruits are already harvested, not directly connected to the trees anymore, while the trunk is part of the tree she possessed. Maybe she can manipulate touch feeling, so she didn’t feel pain when the fruit or the juice got harvested. Who knows, if she can feel people who touch the trees, her nerve should’ve connected to a part of the trees, logically.

Just think of it like, the trees are leaf’s hair, cut it and it’ll grow right back up.

This is clearly not a subject an engineer should dwell on, even more to accept as a fact

    1. Not that the first time I have heard of this idea, and I am not in the related area either. Just something I read somewhere and that has come up in random discussions. If I had a bit more interest I could have read up on it.

      1. Yes, people may have heard of the idea, but for an engineer to accept it for a fact when even leading physicists have not yet quite agreed on the nature of time is.. weird

        1. Not really. He could have just heard it or read about it and assumed it was true, therefore it is a “fact” to him. This isn’t his field after all.

          1. That’s what I’m saying as weird, this isn’t his field at all, yet how did he, as a professional engineer, just throw aside his hypothesis because of something he ‘just heard somewhere’?

          1. True, then what Roland said was either complete bullshit if he didn’t know GR, or he just said that space, and thus manipulation of it, also doesn’t exist, as it is placed in the same equivalence in GR,

Yet we have seen Roland not denying the possibility of space manipulation through magic like teleportation and/or dimensional travelling, not unlike Nightingale’s ability

“That’s not it, time is just a concept that human beings set up out of convenience, and it, on itself does not exist. So, as a non-existing thing, how can you affect it?”

          Time doesn’t exist.
Space-Time is something different from time.
Roland first forgot about GR but then corrected himself because his first idea would be impossible due to GR.

          1. well, we have seen time acceleration on a small scale (a space ship rotating fast around the earth, utilizing the theories of relativity) didn’t we? So leaving the philosophy aside, since it’s already proven possible by the most credible source (experimentation) then what Roland said about not being able to affect time is already wrong.

            Liked by 1 person

    2. Not realy.
standard measurment of time as we know it (seconds, hour, etc) were recent invention (like originated from just around year 1800, when Train just become a thing – and people need timetables to keep track of things and so Mechanical clocks were invented)
before that, (say in middle ages – like the setting of this novel) they just say vague thing like noons, dawn or night. and now we know its midnight if clock point at 00.00.

What roland point out were, the measurment of time. how you control it if you dont have spesific “anchor”, “guide” or standard measurment.
Say, Paper bring the object 1 hour back in time. how do paper measure hour ? if she dont have concept of hour

however concept of Time is diffrent. like those relativity theory or quantum theory.
people like to treat as it was the same. since it also use common human standart measurment. but those 2 were quite a diffrent thing

      1. The hypothesis was ‘time acceleration’; it speeds things up, not bringing things to a certain point in a timeline. Paper doesn’t need to know the exact interval to get, she just needs to know how much faster it is; which is a natural concept for any normal human from any eras.

        1. Your point is: Roland shouldn’t know how time works since he’s not a scientist and he only thinks he knows how time works.

Well… Roland thinks he knows how time works…
          and he is correct.

Time is actually rather simple and we know A LOT about it compared to other topics such as gravity. Our theories about time have been proven by countless experiments. Roland simply knows the basic concepts of these theories ’cause you can find them in many (scientific) papers. If I would ask my friends (I have a few engineer friends) I’m sure most of them can accuratly explain the basics of time.

          Like

          1. No, not how time works, but what time is,
Saying we know how time works requires that time does exist, but if he’s still saying that time doesn’t exist even then, then it’s clear that we’re talking about two different concept of time,

But then, what is the ‘time’ that he dismissed as nonexistent?

            Like

          2. The concept he dismissed was,
So far, all magic he has seen, exert its power on objects, not ideas, even two of the more abstract witches, Tilly and Scroll, have their power being used in their brain, not intellect, object, not idea.

        2. Either Speed things up, Back in Time, or stay still – its still the same to my earlier post

Time is simply a man made invention to count the period of events.
It does not exist in nature.
Since early beginnings man has tried to put a meaning to events to somehow define the past, present, and future.
Time has evolved from a sun dial to indicate parts of a day, to the moon, to indicate certain seasons, such as when to harvest, to the sun, to indicate periods like years.
Humans always try to improve the concept of time, today they use the cycles from the resonance of a cesium atom to be a reference.

what people usualy refer to time is the measurment, either it seconds, year or eons.

Because we can count the cycles the elapse during an event, we somehow convince ourselves that time is real, but only because it appears to be real because it is so convenient to use, yet it does not exist. This was the original concept of Time

      2. Nah. Greeks have been using modern hours, seconds, days since BCE. They mashed up to thoughts to get there; the Egptian duodecimal system (12 units to get 24 hour days) and the Babylonian sexagesimal system (60 units… which was lifted from the Sumerians thousands of years before).

Nothing recent about it home slice. Unless you’re counting from the 145,000 years since man became modern. Then yeah, pretty recent. Other wise, check ya facts.

        Like

        1. Nope, they have same division of time. but it was diffrent than what we know today

For example Their hour is 75 standard (modern) minutes while night hour would approximaly 45 standard (modern) minutes.
Romans which adopt greek one also divide it same like we do. but the similiarity is just the thin thick.

Today we use, UTC standard. which measurement were standarized with atomic clock. just because they use same 24 hour, minutes, and seconds like we do, doesnt mean the duration were the same 🙂

          Like

    3. And to say that time does not exist like that is, for what I know, not really. I mean, even in Einstein’s space-time, there is a temporal dimensionl, and Paper ability could very well modifies this dimension (which is not an idea). Well, it would also mean that she could affect space or gravity (which is basically a distortion of space-time). The MEASUREMENT of time is an invention. So I think the author misunderstood something, or I’m wrong. The major problems in modern physics are the flow of time (closely linked with the second law of thermodynamics) and the paradoxes that could be caused by time-travel (and Einstein-Rosen bridges, etc..). So Roland shouldn’t have just discard his idea.

        1. Actually, time and space are the same thing. Time is an abstraction of one of the characteristics of space-time. You can effect the flow of time with energy, because energy effected the space-time continuum (in the form of gravity). However, you can’t reverse the flow of time. Why not, no-one is quite sure yet.

  5. Like srsly, if Paper does turn out to be a bona fide naturall all-purpose catalyst, then holy shit Roland’s plans of modernisation just got on a rocket. If she can (hypothesising here) speed up and optimise reactions, say for example the Haber Process, which generates artificial ammonia that can be used in fertilisers, and later, explosives. A lot of modern industrial chemistry lives and dies by their catalysts, so fully evoed Paper = industrial revolution is an unstoppable train, and ggwp no re demons.

    1. Seeing how magic is consumed in the process, she’s both a catalyst and a reactant.

As for her immediate potential, along with the ice witch, she can probably lower the reaction temperature in the nitro manufacturing to the point it’s possible to produce large quantities quickly and safely.

  7. I’m glad it wasn’t time acceleration. Time manipulation abilities tend to rely on “it’s magic” kind of reasonings that doesn’t really play with real world physics. I tend to fan wank any time related ability as a reality altering power and leave it at that.

With catalyst witch I see a huge efficiency boost coming for his various chemical processing. Incidentally this reminded me of a book called Scientic Experiments in Qi Gong where it was claimed that Qi Gong could change half life and act as a catalyst for chemical reactions. Of course results are not reproducible without the magic user.

Please stop translating this so Qidian can take over and actually translate this novel at a speed with which it deserves. Every other top ten Chinese LN gets translated at a much faster pace of multiple novels a day. Why? Because they’re so popular and so many people read it that it shouldn’t be translated at one chapter a day, or less, which is what you do.

If you can’t do that you have no business translating this novel. A translation group should be translating with better quality and more daily releases.

  12. “That’s not it, time is just a concept that human beings set up out of convenience, and it, on itself does not exist.”

Oh for fuck’s sake. NO. So this stupid nonsense is a popular misconception in China too apparently. Of course time fucking exists. It might not exist in quite as simple a form as we normally think of it, but literally every field of physics deals with some model or abstraction of time.

So yes, sure, the human concept of “time” and the language we use to describe it is just an abstraction of the underlying physical reality. A reference to it. Just like literally every word we use. That’s how language fucking works. That doesn’t mean that the underlying physical reality “doesn’t exist”. That’s retarded.

100% of the time anyone claims this shit, their arguments are just sophistic drivel and semantic weaseling. And that includes a fair few legitimate scientists and philosophers who are trying to express something very difficult without the proper linguistic tools so they make the unfortunate decision to butcher an existing word for no good reason.
